More About Me

I am a parent of two girls who are lovely, most of the time. One’s a young teen and the other is a tween.

I worked as an IT professional in Software Development in its heyday and lived through the clichéd IT terms like Y2K bug, Project and Process Management (remember Business Process Re-engineering?), CRM, Knowledge Management, Data Warehouse and Data Mining, global teams, virtual office, tele-commuting, etc. I wonder nowadays how different it would have been to have all the social media we have now.

I really loved studying Philosophy when I was at college/uni – more than the computing subjects I had to do to get my computing degree. Things like these have stayed with me: “Cogito, ergo sum” (I think therefore I am), “I am be-ing in the world with others (also be-ing)” – studied word for word, “Do not box the I” (box as in put in a box or limit), etc. Philosophy has taught me to question, a skill education reformists now say as being killed by schooling.

I’m passionate about learning. I say this not in the “lifelong learner” sense (aren’t we all anyway, really, for how else can we survive in this world? (think adaptation as requisite to survival)). The notion of teacher as “facilitator of learning” really appeals to me.

Even More About Me

I love change. If nothing else, I’ll move furniture!

I love being creative. Usually, this takes the form of papercraft (yes I have a craft blog) but I try to do this at work. Some of my best lessons are characterized by creative quirkiness like introducing Algebra using a song by Rihanna.

I constantly struggle with the urge to have parenthetical remarks. I often give in.

My favourite colour is green; that says a lot if you’re into that sort of stuff.

I’m an ESL-speaker so my English is not always perfect.  This is not an excuse, by the way, just sharing something about me. J

    Hey Ms Mawby,

Hope you’re having a great day!

I’m doing an expert roundup on my site and I think many new Math teachers using education technology products in their classroom like me would love to know your answer to this question :

If you could only use 3 Education technology tools/apps/sites for your teaching which 3 tools would you choose? e.g. WolframAlpha, KhanAcademy and Inside Mathematics.

    Thanks in advance!

As soon as I’m done compiling the results, I would inform and link back to your blog.

    Thank you!
    Ishan

Am interested in the origins of my name. Thanks to the Internet , my assumption that I was the only one has proved wrong, but I am interested to learn if there is a connection.
